Welcome to The UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate Journal of History.

The UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate Journal of History, or, The UGH Journal, showcases the intellectual, scholarly excellence and curious, critical engagement of undergraduate historians. Established in 2020 to provide a platform for original historical research, The UGH Journal celebrates the diverse and innovative approaches that students bring to understandings of the past.

Our goal is to recognize and share outstanding undergraduate research that contributes to the discipline of history, and offer a unique opportunity for students to experience the process of publication. Each volume includes a range of essays reflecting the wide array of interests and methodologies utilized by historians.

New issues are published online in May and November each year. We accept submissions on a rolling basis. Please see our Submission guidelines below for more details on how to publish in The UGH Journal.

Rigorous Standards: Articles are selected through a competitive review process led by undergraduate editors with faculty oversight. Professional Experience: Gain firsthand experience in academic publishing, from submission to peer review and final editing. Showcase Your Work: Share your research with peers, faculty, and a wider audience interested in historical inquiry.

The UGH Journal is managed by a team of dedicated undergraduate students passionate about history and enrolled in HIST 196 JABC. The editorial team ensures publications meet high academic standards while fostering a collaborative environment for authors.
